Fishing Season
The Dee opens on 1st February and closes on 30th September
Description of Fishing
The fishing suits both beginners and experts alike. Wading is generally possible but on many of the Pools is not essential. The Beat therefore has many "grassy bank Pools" which can readily be fished.
The Dee itself is one of the most famous and beautiful salmon rivers in Scotland as well as being one of the most prolific in fish. The river flows through Royal Deeside where there is an abundance of excellent spawning grounds and nursery areas, then runs clear and rapid through every variety of Highland and Lowland scenery for over ninety miles before reaching the North Sea. The Ardoe and Murtle Beat is on the Lower Dee where most of the fish caught are fresh and sea-liced. The record Dee fish of 56lbs was caught on Ardoe water by the ghillie in the Autumn of 1886.
Working downstream the Beat, the Pools are as follows:
Murtle Pools: Haugh Pool, Ferry House Stream, Upper Heathcot, Lower Heathcot , Ardoe Pool, New Pool North, Cults Pool
Ardoe Pools : Greenbank Pool, Boat Pool, Home Pool, New Pool South, Island Pool, Shakkin Bridge Pool, Manse Pool The maximum number of rods on the Beat is limited to eight. The fishers alternate each day, changing at midnight.
